Grant from City of Winnipeg for green initiative helps keep clubhouse warm

March 5, 2020 – Windsor Park Golf Course – The purchase of new windows for the Windsor Park Nordic Centre clubhouse located at 10 Rue Des Meurons was made possible by support from Councillor Brian Mayes and the City of Winnipeg Golf Services and have resulted in reduced heating costs and increased comfort for skiers using the clubhouse and locker rooms.

Ben Fey, Director of Winnipeg Golf Services, commented; “The new windows will be great for the golfers and the citizens of Winnipeg who use the golf course. They will add to the views of beautiful Windsor Park Golf Course in the summer and the nordic skiers in the winter.”

Last year, the Cross Country Ski Association of Manitoba (CCSAM) approached Councillor Brian Mayes with a proposal to replace the old windows in the clubhouse. The project was approved and completed this season.

Brian Mayes St. Vital Councillor; “(Windsor Park is) A very well used facility that is used year round. I’m glad to support the golfers and the cross country skiers.”

For over 40 years, Windsor Park has been the centre of cross country skiing in Winnipeg.  Since 2000, CCSAM has operated the Windsor Park Nordic Centre through a lease agreement with the City of Winnipeg. Each winter, it offers Winnipeggers groomed, night-lit ski trails, lessons, rentals and many programs and events.

The centre averages 10,000 ski visits each winter. CCSAM’s partnership with the City of Winnipeg leverages city assets for year-round use and increases recreational and lifestyle opportunities for Manitobans.

Cross Country Ski Association of Manitoba Executive Director, Karin McSherry said: “The new windows project at Windsor Park Golf Course/Nordic Centre is just one example of how collaboration between the private and public sectors and between different user groups (golfers and skiers) can work for the benefit of so many. This is an important green space and recreational space in Winnipeg – not just for golfers and skiers but for other community members who walk and run and bike past here and stop in for coffee or hot chocolate to warm up or meet with friends. We all need to work together to maintain this place and that is what we plan to do.”
